I have been working on my Canada Council for the Arts grant entitled Taking Nlaka’pamux Tattooing to the World coming up on a year this november. I originally planned an in person Nlaka’pamux Community Tattooing event for the summer of 2020, due to health and safety concerns associated with COVID19 the community organizers and I decided to postpone the event. We have had a chance to reconsider and reformulate our original plan and are now planning two separate events.
The first event is a Virtual Nlaka’pamux Tattoo Gathering, being held on October 10th, 2020 at 1:00pm Pacific time via Zoom conferencing.
The meeting link is https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdl0L3Dlzv.
If the above link does not work, head to the bottom of the page for full meeting information.
This virtual gathering will include a collection of cultural tattoo practitioners and wearers of ancestral markings to discuss the topic of healing through the application of ancestral tattoos.
The confirmed presenters are:
Nahaan who is a Tlingit culture bearer and interdisciplinary artist. He has been helping to revive traditional tattoo on the Pacific Northwest coast since 2009.
Kanahus Manuel who is a Secwepemc activist, handpoke tattoo artist, birth keeper, and member of the Tiny House Warriors.
Lane Wilcken who is a scholar, cultural tattoo practitioner and advocate for the critically endangered practice of "batok" or cultural tattoos of the Philippines. He also has studied other related indigenous traditions of the Philippines and greater Pacific with nearly three decades of research and experience. His mother is from the Philippines and his father is of English and Scandinavian descent. Lane is the author of "Filipino Tattoos Ancient to Modern" -and- "The Forgotten Children of Maui."
Each presenter will speak for 15-20 minutes, at the conclusion of the presentation some of my Interior Tattoo training students will be acting as official responders. As official responders they will be offering questions or impressions from the presenter for 5-10 minutes.
The official responders include:
Robin Humphrey: Nlaka’pamux
Jacqueline Xex: Tsilhqotʼin
Sheldon Pierre Louis: Syilx
At the conclusion of the event if we have time there will be a 20-30 minute question and answer period were we will field questions from the virtual attendees.
For information on the second event please stay tuned to this blog, I will be posting more information in the next few days.
I am excited to present this virtual tattoo gathering with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the IOTA Institute.
